About Us

About Bharatpur‑I Development Block

Bharatpur-I Development Block is an important administrative unit located in the Kandi Sub-Division of Murshidabad District, under the Malda Division of West Bengal. The block plays a significant role in local governance, rural development, and public service delivery in the region.

The administrative headquarters of Bharatpur-I Development Block is situated at Bharatpur, and the area is served by the Bharatpur Police Station, ensuring law and order across the block.

Administrative Structure

Bharatpur-I Development Block covers a geographical area of 183.72 square kilometres. The block consists of:

  • 1 Panchayat Samiti — Bharatpur-1 Panchayat Samiti
  • 8 Gram Panchayats — Alugram, Amlai, Bharatpur, Godda, Gundiria, Sijgram, and Talgram
  • 121 Gram Sansads (Village Councils)
  • 92 Mouzas
  • 82 Inhabited Villages

Geographical Features

The block is located at 23°52′45″ North latitude and 88°05′18″ East longitude. Bharatpur-I is enriched by several important rivers, namely the Mayurakshi, Kuye, and Babla, which contribute to agriculture, irrigation, and the overall livelihood of the local population.

Demographic Profile

As per the Census of India, 2011, Bharatpur-I Development Block has a total population of 1,72,702, entirely residing in rural areas. The population includes 89,088 males (52%) and 83,614 females (48%). Children in the age group of 0–6 years number 22,944.

The Scheduled Caste population stands at 23,865 (13.82%), while the Scheduled Tribe population is 428 (0.25%), reflecting the social composition of the block.

Literacy Status

The total number of literate persons in Bharatpur-I Development Block is 94,247, accounting for an overall literacy rate of 62.93% among the population above six years of age. Male literacy is 67.94%, with 52,620 literate males, while female literacy stands at 57.57%, with 41,627 literate females. The gender gap in literacy is 10.37%, indicating scope for further improvement in female education.
